Sadly, the majority (like 70%*) of today’s employees are ‘not engaged’ or are ‘actively disengaged’ at work - and if you want your business to thrive, a solution to this problem must be found. 

Now, some businesses turn to material perks - bonuses, games rooms, free food - but, while appreciated, these perks don’t address the much more effective drivers of long-term term well-being for your team. 

So, what do they really want? 

  • Inspiration - make a point of letting your team know how their work in improving people’s live and providing a real purpose. Sending around client testimonials and announcing when the business makes donations/gets involved in charities or community events are just a couple of ways you can do this. Be an inspiration yourself to your team - work alongside them on a daily or weekly basis to show your commitment to them and the broader organisation.  
     
  • Kindness - the basis of a kind culture involves consideration and respect, which increases creative output at the individual and team level. Do small things to show you care about your team as people, not just employees. Ask how they are doing and really listening to their answer is a great first step.
     
  • Self-care - offering gym memberships, meditation or yoga classes is great, if intense work schedules don’t impede on your team’s ability to take advantage of those offers. You need to create a culture in which it is encouraged and acceptable to prioritise self-care - fitness, sleep, relaxation and even complete breaks from work. 
     
  • A planned future - team members will engage with the bigger picture, the long-term plan that has both them and the business at the heart of it.
